"Al Maghrib" Special edition. Commemoration of the 40th day after the loss of Said Hajji, sixth year - No. 937 April 29, 1942
By God the Most Magnanimous tell us about those
Whose bones lie buried deep in the earth in repose.
Tell us about their race and rank in occupation;
Were they lords or serfs under their subjugation?
Who among them conquered deeply the heart
Whose memories never a single pain did impart.
Who among them has drawn a crowd;
Acclaimed by a whole army out loud?
Who is adorned with a halo during a fight?
Who has fallen to swarms of insects in flight?
No one remains to relate to us
Trials lived in a state delirious.
Oh! Those toys like dust have been trampled
By feet and become nothingness once settled.
Earth preserved their remains in its girth
After seeing in flesh and blood their birth.
My God, why live if in a day or another
If we are to vanish like smoke forever.
As the dead moan and complain of intruders
Who assault their graves to admit newcomers,
They witness the earth sag beneath their sacrament
Swallowing, sword, feathers and other accoutrement.
Life is like a vivid dream when one is dormant
That's forgotten once awakened from its foment.
How many illusions have humans been fed
Be they commoner, ignorant or noble well bred.
In vain we implore for delay of the final settlement
Guaranteed to all, but hope obtains no contentment.
For death knows neither to respite, nor to abate
Nor even on holy months to silence the whims of fate.
Said lay bedridden, in pain all over
We all prayed for him to recover.
With the sobs and tears that arose suddenly
After anguished cry, the Reaper did his duty.
Now the fallen one has left us for new pastures
Leaving our broken hearts stalked by vultures.
Death stirred the blazing embers of distress
Before all the loved ones mired in sadness.
Not a dry eye can be detected by sight
Like after a coup there's no more fight.
The people have all cried, and regretted a lot
As if between them, they felt a kinship so hot.
What virtue of his is not so well concealed?
What defect can we thus to him appealed?
His pure heart overflowed with generosity
He was a creature of very extreme bounty.
The treasures of science that he hoarded
To the East and West he had forwarded.
He served his country with written words and deed.
Spending sleepless nights with his mind at full speed.
He dedicated his life to guide his nation
To heights that conformed to his ambition.
Nothing dissuaded him from the struggle he waged
Respite and truce sworn in to oaths he had made.
The winds have carried him above the summit
Overlooking the earth, forever veiled from it.
To fatal heights at early dawn he is driven
To his last refuge, by his own to lie hidden.
Henceforth he will be alone, bold and intrepid
Watched by God, in earth's bosom so humid.
No longer to bear any more affliction or senescence.
No more law of the fittest and an end to all sufferance.
My condolences to his kin, and on him let peace be
By God's will let fade a life but remember it brightly.
Partout il est question de lui comme d'un fait d'armes.
