Al Maghrib - May 12, 1937
We have been critical of the situation in Morocco and we were told we were enemies of the government and of France. We made demands for indispensable reforms and they retorted that we were dreamers. We paired down these demands to those most urgent (only) to be told to wait until the budget is adopted. Then, the budgetary exercise ran its course without observing the implementation of one nor even an attempt in implementing any one of the reforms. Not even the start of any deliberation on the methods of implementation of these reforms was noted.
And so here we are at the threshold of another budgetary exercise. Will they again tell us to... Wait (until)? Is Morocco condemned to remain eternally at the bottom of the abyss of ignorance, indulgence and injustice even as the crime for which it is accused stems from pure fantasy?
Promises can not in any manner dispense with action, no more than can hope be based on mirage. Patience has its limits; it can not wait indefinitely, From all aspects the situation in Morocco is distressing and troubling. Do you wish, gentlemen of account, that Moroccan lives continue to vegetate in this present state of misery, destitution and unrest?
We demand knowledge because we are ignorant. We solicit work because we are oppressed. We desire bread because we hunger. We are always ready to hear your promises. So when will they see a start? We wish for reform. Are you opposed? We strive so that the Moroccan people can advance. Do you deny us this right?
