• First, I didn’t notice that Said’s articles were from 1937. They looked pretty current and up to date. Fascinating read. When I noticed the date, they became nearly surrealistic, considering the current gloomy context.

  Isn’t it sad how Morocco and the rest of the Maghreb are currently falling back into their islamistic Almohadic dark ages? Said’s publications are living proof that these countries were already a lot more progressive and forward thinking 70 years ago than they are now.

  Mon père Abdelaziz Lahrech (1918-1995) a fréquenté pratiquement tous les protagonistes que vous citez, ses récits oraux dont il me faisait part sur cette époque se recoupent avec votre histoire.

  Lui-même a été très actif dés la signature du Manifeste pour l’indépendance, il organisa la grève des postiers en janvier 1944, emprisonné 3 mois et révoqué des PTT pendant 12 ans.

  Cependant, j’ai l’impression que tout un pan de l’histoire de notre pays semble avoir été “confisqué” ou “occulté”.

  Pensez-vous qu’une réhabilitation soit encore possible pour rendre hommage à tous ces hommes courageux qui se sont battus pour notre liberté ?

Unlike some other nationalists’ vitriolic pamphlets of the time, Said’s op-eds and editorials were well thought out and sharply to the point.   reading Said’s articles on Morocco and the french protectorate feels like taking a ride in a time machine! My family emigrated from Casablanca to the U.S. in 1954 when I was still young, yet I’ve kept some vivid memories of this period.

  Trying to revive past souvenirs, I’ve spent some time searching for old moroccan publications and photographs of the time. While Dafina features many old photographs and a nice friendly community, your site complements this with real press articles and interesting op-eds, and thus contributes greatly to add a whole new intellectual dimension to it all.

  Thank you so much for your great work at reviving a past that has been long forgotten. It’s amazing that you’ve been able to dig out those old articles in arabic and translating them in French. It takes a lot of time and perseverance, and it is clearly a labor of love.

  Keep up the good work, and as others have asked for: please do resume the English translations! Il n’y a pas que le français dans ce monde.

  Said seems to have been a very thoughtful and reasoning journalist. Thank you for sharing his essays and biography!

  I love this site, because it exposes a whole new perspective on France’s Protectorate of Morocco. Neither is it the usual hopelessly biased view of the French intellectual elite, nor is it the hatred-filled ramblings of ultra-nationalist Arabs of yesterday or viscerally anti-western Muslims of today! Quite the contrary: it is a very lucid view of what may have been representative of past events.

  But what I REALLY appreciated the most: it is an invaluable historical documentation, untainted by current events, and that’s what puts this site apart and makes it very special.

  My only wish would be, if you could replace the Babelfish-generated translations with real ones in the foreseeable future. It’s long overdue, you know, and you could reach a much wider audience this way. You definitely deserve more exposure, and all it takes may be manual translations. They don’t need to be perfect, but everything manual is infinitely better than Babelfish’s poor attempts at translating French idioms.

  Please do make a little effort: it’s well worth it.

  J’ai beaucoup apprécié votre suggestion d’ajouter la langue berbère, non pas parce qu’elle est maintenant considérée comme langue officielle au Maroc, mais parce qu’à mes yeux elle l’a été depuis la nuit des temps, avant de faire cause commune avec la langue arabe après l’avènement de l’Islam dans les pays du Maghreb.

  Hélas, je dois avouer mon ignorance totale de cette langue que je n’ai jamais eu l’occasion d’étudier et ne peux que me réjouir des efforts déployés jusqu’ici pour la replacer dans le concert des langues vivantes, porteuses des grandes civilisations de ce monde.

  Les intellectuels berbères qui se sont attelés à cette tâche ont ainsi le mérite de “ressusciter une âme”. S’il se trouve parmi eux des volontaires intéressés par les thèmes développés dans les écrits journalistiques de Said Hajji, je serai heureux d’ouvrir une nouvelle rubrique destinée aux textes que les uns ou les autres auraient traduits en langue berbère.

• Quel contraste!

  Comparé à la situation actuelle ici au Maroc (cf. TelQuel No 266: le nouvel ordre moral), la société semblait être beaucoup plus progressiste et libérale à l’époque. Et cela malgré le, ou peut-être à cause du, protéctorat! C’est vraiment étonnant! Et aujourd’hui???? Dommage qu’on est en train de dérapper dans l’obscurantisme le plus noir de notre histoire contemporaine.

In Japan, only very few (if any) would have expected this issue to have actually been brought up anywhere in an arabic journal in the early thirties – either in the Arab world, or in the predominently Arab parts of North Africa.   I am sorry to disappoint you as the only print version available for the moment being is the Arabic one and is being distributed in Morocco.

  The French version is on the way to be published in Canada and will probably be achieved at the end of the year. If you are interested in the French version, although you prefer the English one, you will be informed in the appropriate time in the Impressum page.

  As far as the English version is concerned, it is still submitted to the translation, and I am afraid it would take some time before it would be ready for publication.

  Les informations que vous avez bien voulu me communiquer au sujet de la question berbère telle qu’elle est actuellement percue par une partie de l’opinion publique au Maroc, sont certainement de nature à éclairer la classe des intellectuels sur les véritables intentions des promoteurs de la diversité culturelle et linguistique et de la valorisation des héritages éthniques. Placé à ce niveau, le débat mérite d’être engagé, ne serait-ce que pour lever toute équivoque de nature à nourrir des amalgames regrettables. La confrontation des idées, une fois soulagée des préjugés qui sont dans bien des cas à la base de prises de position fondées sur des idées recues et souvent mal digérées est, à mon sens, le meilleur moyen de faire entendre sa voix au milieu du tumulte général, tout en se résignant à accepter sereinement la contradiction, surtout quand celle-ci se veut constructive. Vous n’êtes pas sans savoir que les constructions théoriques péchent à bien des égards par un défaut de perfection, si bien que nombre de convictions méritent d’être mieux approfondies, en particulier si l’objectif à atteindre se propose de combler le fossé qui est en train de se creuser entre les différentes composantes de notre société, et qui me fait penser au mot célèbre de Pascal : “Pauvre monde qu’une barrière factice sépare : vérité en deca des Pyrénées, erreur au-delà”. Par conséquent, il n’est pas difficile d’admettre que personne n’est dépositaire de l’absolue vérité. Ceux qui, mûs par les sentiments que vous savez, ont eu l’audace de prétendre que la vérité sortait de la bouche des canons, ont réussi à conduire leur peuple au-devant de la plus grande catastrophe de leur histoire.

  Ceci étant, vous convenez que le livre d’or dont vous vous êtes servi comme support publicitaire pour véhiculer des informations sur l’état actuel de la question berbère, n’est pas du tout indiqué pour servir de plate-forme au genre de débat que vous voulez y introduire. Ce débat a intérêt à être mené sur un site autonome. Le livre d’or dont il est question ici a été institué dans l’unique souci de recueillir les retombées de lecture suggérées par une réflexion sur les thèmes développés dans l’ouvrage consacré à la vie et à l’oeuvre du titulaire du site qui porte son nom.

  Maroc: les berbères veulent s’inscrire dans l’ouverture du paysage politique national

  RABAT (AP) – Après les islamistes, désormais représentés par deux partis politiques légaux, les militants de la cause berbère au Maroc ont officiellement déposé une demande d’autorisation de création du Parti démocratique amazigh (PDA), dont le congrès constitutif est prévu le 15 novembre prochain.

  S’il est autorisé par le ministère de l’Intérieur, le PDA sera la première formation politique au Maroc à se réclamer statutairement en faveur de la reconnaissance identitaire berbère (amazigh). Appuyée par un très puissant réseau associatif, la population berbérophone au Maroc est estimée entre 50 et 60% de la population totale (30 millions d’habitants).

  “Il existe aujourd’hui une nouvelle sensibilité sur la question amazighe et il est temps de faire un travail politique pour éviter son instrumentalisation”, a déclaré à l’Associated Press Omar Louzi, président du comité préparatoire du congrès constitutif du PDA. “Pour l’instant, le ministère de l’Intérieur observe un total mutisme sur notre demande”, ajoute Omar Louzi.

  “Le PDA est ouvert à tous les Marocains, arabophones et amazighophones”, précisent les statuts du futur parti. Parmi les objectifs affichés du PDA figurent “le fédéralisme”, “la promotion de la diversité culturelle, linguistique et religieuse” et la “promotion de la laïcité”, alors que l’Islam et l’arabe sont la religion et la langue officielles de l’Etat marocain, selon la Constitution.

  Interrogé sur la compatibilité de ces statuts avec le projet de loi portant réforme des partis politiques, qui interdit tout référentiel religieux ou ethnique, Omar Louzi rappelle l’autorisation accordée mardi à la création d’un nouveau parti islamiste, baptisé “Alliance civilisationnelle”.

  “Il ne peut y avoir deux poids, deux mesures en faveur des islamistes”, explique le militant berbériste. “Le mot ‘amazigh’ ne renvoie pas à une race mais à une civilisation”.

  Habitants originels de l’Afrique du Nord et sahélienne, avant la conquête arabe du VIIIe siècle, les Berbères nourrissent un vif sentiment identitaire marqué par des rébellions régulières contre le pouvoir central (Rif au Maroc, Kabylie en Algérie, Touaregs au Niger).

  Pour répondre à ces revendications identitaires, qui demeurent un sujet très sensible au Maroc, le roi Mohammed VI a mis en place en 2002 un institut royal de la culture amazighe (IRCAM). Dirigée par l’universitaire Ahmed Boukous, l’IRCAM a standardisé l’enseignement du tamazight (langue berbère) et de sa graphie (tifinagh), désormais introduits progressivement dans les écoles marocaines aux côtés de l’arabe.

  Mais la fracassante démission en février de sept des membres de l’IRCAM, qui dénonçaient “l’absence de résultats palpables” de l’institution royale et “le manque d’avancées” de l’officialisation du Tamazight comme langue officielle du royaume, a relancé le débat politique sur la promotion de l’identité berbère au Maroc.

  Le livre d’or n’est pas un forum pour échanger des prises de position sur la question berbère. Mais je me dois de vous signaler que c’est grâce à “ce Monsieur” et à ses semblables que vous pouvez à l’heure actuelle vous exprimer librement.

  Pour ma part, je fais mienne cette citation qu’on attribue à Voltaire: “Je ne suis pas d’accord avec ce que vous dites, mais je me battrai pour que vous puissiez le dire”.

   

• La question berbère

  J’ai lu avec attention les écrits de ce monsieur sur ce qu’il appelle ” la question berbère” j’ai lu ses arguments qui se limitent au fameux dhahir “berbère” de 1933. Je comprends sa position elle est tout à fait en phase avec ce qu’il représentait : le symbole de la naisssance de la presse arabe au maroc. Cette presse qui aujourd’hui s’en prend, comme à son époque et toujours avec les mêmes arguments (40 ans après la fin du colonialisme) dès qu’ils se trouve face à une revendication berbère.

  Ce monsieur n’est pas moins colonialiste que les anciens colisateurs europeen. Il veut imposer l’arabe aux berbères en leur interdisant leur propre langue pire, il considère même que les berbère n’existent pas ou ne peuvent exister qu’à travers la langue, la culture, l’histoire arabes.

  Ce sont des impérialistes arabes comme lui qui ont fait du berbère ” un support d’apprentissage de la langue arabe” et ce en 2005. Les berbères ne sont pas dupes ils connaissent desormais leur interêts et peuvent se positionner qu’en fonction de ces derniers et jamais dans l’interêt de l’impérialisme arabo-islamique ou de l’islamo-arabisme l’un nourit l’autre.

  Vive la nation berbère Vive le maroc berbère.

  Dear site authors/editors,

  I’ve stumbled across this site while hunting for informations about the social role of women in the arabic world.

  While this site deals primarily with the thirties, it is nonetheless intriguing since it bares a lot of relevancy to the current state of world affairs.

  To my eternal shame, I would never have expected such a progressive mind set in an arabic country. Such is the brainwashing power of our dumbed down media nowadays.

  I am very fond of “Women’s role in Moroccan society,” “The nightmare of injustice,” and “Freedom of Speech;” though other pamphlets make also for a refreshingly amazing reading! The few translated background notes on Said are worth reading too!

  In a time where our country is sadly sliding into its darkest hours, your site comes as a true beacon light of hope; hope that freedom will always find its way, as long as decent people have the guts and courage to stand up and speak their mind.   Monsieur Hajji, journaliste, homme de lettre, homme épris de justice, avocat des pauvres, en avance sur son temps,visionnaire en son temps a été un homme courageux pour oser à l’époque déjà critiquer tout ce qui était intolérable. Dommage qu’il n’ait pas vécu longtemps,il est mort si jeune. C’était un homme qui aurait gagné à être connu.

  Mark, you’re only partially right here. Reporting news is a difficult business, esp. when you’re emotionally involved. As we’ve seen, the “powers that be” sometimes can and do act ruthlessly against innocent occupiees. What would you expect from the local press of an occupied country? Friendly unbiased news, or perhaps even news in your favor? C’mon!

  Journalism is also a form of politics, and it’s their prerogative to criticize you as hard as they can. If they can’t (or don’t want to) fight you militarily, journalism is their only recourse. We should be proud when someone like Said or countless anonymous journalists risk their freedom and life to express themselves. They do this from within, and it is incredibly courageous of them because they know that their life is at stake with every word they write.

  You’re right though when it comes to impartial news reporting. Having read some of google-translated articles, I was amazed at the non-judgemental tone of those historic documents. This form of journalism is very ethical in my view. It takes a great personality to write this way.

• Very informative site from an american perspective

  I’ve discovered your great informative site while looking for arabic media reports concerning our current presence in Iraq. Said’s articles about Morocco, back in the 1930ies (!), came not only as a big surprise, they are also an eye opener on the great civilization of a moderate arabic country, w.r.t. its interaction with an occupying western power.

  From an outsider’s point of view, it looks like the then new moroccan press was much more objective in its reporting back then, than current arabic media today (at least judging from what we can read on the internet and see on satellite tv).

  Said’s articles are of a great lucidity and clarity in their analysis, yet easy to follow and a pleasure to read. I’d only wished my French was a little bit better to more fully enjoy the reading!

  These articles by Said are a very important historic legacy in and by themselves. It is great that you’ve took it over to translate the arabic texts (which no-one outside the arab world can understand) into French and ultimately English. Your site is a big contribution to our understanding of a civilization that is very different from ours, yet that shares so many common values.

  A social critical journalism in Morocco while occupied by France is truely remarkable and very courageous. We had similar problems under communism where journals and books could only be circulated by samizdat. Reading about the hand-written newspaper in “Founder of the moroccan national press in arabic” brings back memories of our own past. All in all very, very good site!
