"Al Maghrib" Special edition. Commemoration of the 40th day after the loss of Said Hajji, sixth year - No. 937 April 29, 1942

How many more afflictions can we yet abide
When Death's scythe sweeps the human tide?
It mows stealthily and with total impunity
Where nothing resists it, like in a prairie.

In each of our foyers many tears are shed
In our midst, mourning and sadness spread.
Our sorrow and grief we loudly proclaimed
Shivering, complaining against the ordained.

The dead find the ultimate retreat in the beyond
Covered by a shroud deep beneath the ground.
They occupy a dark and narrow space
Envying none whose fate they yet face.

Have pity Dear Lord, why create these lands
Reduced to desert by such frightful hands?
Create a masterpiece, a life inspired and so lavished
To what purpose if this offspring is suddenly ravished?

To die is certainly the lot all mortals have in common
But a new creation extinguished is too hard to fathom.
Using state of the art, a life You did fashion
Yet it morphed into a nightmare with passion.

The Supreme Being I had never imagined
Destroying a work He Himself determined.
Was this an implacable ruling, a verdict
Rendered enforceable by sacred edict?

Death chooses its own from all who are human
Leading them on its path, like a true herdsman.
Oh! If it only spared a bit our young talented
We would be so relieved and not tormented.

Oh! If it only listened! Said would not today
To his demise so quickly have passed away.
But now that, from his very own he has been torn
Does it matter if Death resumes its march forlorn?

Said has died. And now, after his passing, can we remain
Living a life young and happy in a world with such pain?
Said passed away. A verdict returned without rejoinder
An implacable decision that serves us as a reminder.

Said passed away. His kin remain with very broken hearts all
He submitted to the One who subdues rancor large and small.
Said passed away. His printing house establishment,
Will it stay on course, crowds cheering in contentment?

Dashing and joyful, drawing all of its vanity and pride
From a brave newspaper taking on adversity astride.
From a literary magazine raising high its banner
Defending the nation's honor in dart like manner.

Engaged in the struggle, not minding the iron spear
Piercing its flank, spurred on with courage and no fear.
It shall continue on its way and when it is issued
Readers will draw strength from the staples imbued.

They shall recall when it was put into circulation
Guided by a planner with clearcut determination.
They shall keep it intact without cease and forever
The memory of youth as fresh and tender as ever.

They shall recall amongst all else one quality:
A natural inclination for graceful magnanimity.
They shall never forget that dashing face
On top a body so nimble, Oh! What grace!

They shall relive the day he passed away
A nation bereaved led by all folks from Salé.
Your literary magazine is in black fully attired
Like a mourning suit, yet it be far from expired.

A special edition of the now orphaned press
Its columns filled with letters of your greatness.
Its voice cries out as it feels the grief,
In deep fondness, tears bear its belief.

It reflects a style of language based on disposition
Of sincere expression, pure without ostentation.
A style whose purpose it has understood
To be full of graciousness and brotherhood.

Is this not a debt owed to the deceased
To avoid pain if his newspaper ceased?
And to his family for which there's no solace nor comfort
Who'll help amuse them? Who'll encourage and support?

May Allah not reopen such a laceration
In the hearts torn by so much contusion.
We celebrate today a commemoration
Its echo reverberates across the nation.

The newspaper family, in honor of your memory
Shall pursue its mission without failing its duty.
This family is like a pearl necklace, so very charmin'
Holding together a beautiful bouquet hued carmine.

But this precious necklace is soon dispersed
All around its gems have quickly interspersed
To return to your tomb, bringing along to reveal
The memory of a life. A landscape too surreal!

For these achievements you have forever earned
Gratitude of those who by your deeds have learned.
They will remain unfaltering beyond their good byes
To a son departed to the kingdom up in the skies.

Where life continues with pure serenity and calm
Where no misfortune ever does perturb its charm.
It appears to me, Said, that by your will enured
You left your body and only your soul endured.

You wished to lead a life filled with happiness
In lovely Eden, an Angelic garden full of bliss
In lieu of this lowly world with all it forms of inhibition
Where folk wallow about, in the midst of corruption.

Savor as much as you can the delicacies of Eden
Heaven allows all good, bars all things heathen.
Sleep in Allah's Kingdom, totally wrapped in His Grace
Alongside heaven's angels, firmly in their embrace.
